Awards

The Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic

I served as a juror for the 2009 Sunburst Award, based on excellence of writing in two categories: adult and young adult. The awards are presented annually to Canadian writers with a speculative fiction novel or book-length collection of speculative fiction published any time during the previous calendar year.

Governor General's Literary Awards

I was honoured to be selected to serve as a juror for the Governor General's Literary Awards for Children's Literature in 2007.

Ontario

The Sorcerer’s Letterbox was shortlisted for the Ontario Library Association 2005 Silver Birch Award for Fiction.

The Silver Birch Award was established in 1994 and is part of a children’s reading program developed by the Ontario Library Association. Registered classes or groups of children in grades four, five and six read at least five books on one or both of the Official Selections lists of recent Canadian children’s fiction and non-fiction titles. In the spring, students then cast their votes for the winning titles.

Alberta

Canada's Dollar Coin and Olympic Torch were shortlisted for the Alberta Book Awards.

The Sorcerer’s Letterbox was a finalist for the 2005 Golden Eagle Book Award.

The Alchemist’s Portrait was short-listed for the 2004 Golden Eagle Book Award.

The Golden Eagle Book Award is given annually to an Alberta writer whose book is selected by schoolchildren in grades four through eight in the Southern Alberta communities of Claresholm, Nanton, Stavely, Granum, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek and Lundbreck. What makes the Golden Eagle so special is that the very readers for whom the authors are writing are the ones who select the winning book each year. Although there are Children's Choice awards in other parts of Canada, the Golden Eagle is unique in that it concentrates solely on Alberta authors and their work.

Saskatchewan

I was honoured to be selected to serve as a juror for the Saskatchewan Book Awards in 2008.

The Sorcerer’s Letterbox was short-listed for the 2005 Diamond Willow Award.

Saskatchewan Young Readers' Choice - The Willow Awards, Inc. (SYRCA) is a volunteer-run non-profit, charity established in 2001. SYRCA promotes reading and literacy by granting a "Willow Award" to the Canadian and/or Saskatchewan book(s) voted by Saskatchewan students to be the best of those nominated in designated categories. The Diamond Willow Award is bestowed on titles written for upper elementary readers in grades four, five and six.

Parsec Awards

I served as a judge for the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 Parsec Awards, dedicated to rewarding excellence in Speculative Fiction Podcasting http://www.parsecawards.com/

EPPIE Awards

The Complete Guide to Writing Science Fiction: Volume 1 was the winner in the non fiction category at the EPPIE Awards, presented by The Electronically Published Internet Connection (EPIC) in 2007.
