Animal Adaptations: Resource Conservation

Resource smResource Conservation is part of the Animal Adaptations series.

Many animals have features that help them to survive in their natural habitat. These features are known as adaptations. There are a number of reasons for adaptations including survival in extreme heat and cold, finding food, avoiding predators, and finding a mate. Adaptations happen over thousands or even millions of years. If an adaptation is successful, parents pass it on to their offspring. The adaptation will help the species survive. This process is called natural selection.

Resource conservation is a type of adaptation. Stronger animals that are better suited to their habitat are more likely to survive than weaker animals. Some animals live in areas where food and water are scarce for long periods. It is very important for the animal to conserve resources such as fat and water in the body. If it does not, the animal will not survive.
